The Houses at the Museum Centre

The Fróðá house was built around 1930. A net- and sail maker’s workplace and a popular place to go to for the latest news and gossip. Formerly at 8 Vesturgata. Now used for storage for the Museum and is closed to the public.

 

The Garðar House was originally built in 1876 and has been brought to its original form. It was first built as a parsonage and is the oldest house made of concrete in Iceland. The Garðar house is open to the public and shows an upper class Icelandic home.

 

Geirsstaðir, a private home. Built in 1903. An owner and occupant at one time taught pre-school children here with the house being popularly called “Geirsstaðir University”. Formerly at 24 Skólabraut. The house is currently being refurbished and not yet open to the public

 

Neðri-Sýrupartur, a home built in 1875. The oldest preserved house made of timber in Akranes. Formerly situated not far away from the Akranes lighthouse. The house was restored and refurbished in 2003.
Sandar is a home from 1901. The house is currently being refurbished and closed to the public.

The house of I.O.G.T. was originally builtin 1916 as a barn. The house was restored in 1950 for the I.O.G.T. members of Akranes. The house was moved to the Akranes Museum area in the end of 2004 and has been restored. Opened to the public in 2007.
